El Colmenar or Estación de Gaucín is a quarter of Cortes de la Frontera, situated in a beautiful valley where river Guadiaro flows.

Of recent origin, it was born as a result of the Vultures´s power station and of the train station, no longer that a century ago. However, since ancient times humans populated this area of the valley. Nearby one can find Las Motillas´s cave, with illustrations and paintings from Palaeolithic age, and remains of the Roman city Saepo.

El Colmenar sets up the gateway to the Malaga area of the Alcornocales´ Parque Natural. The surrounding vegetation consists of an amazing forest mass which expands through tens of kilometres. The most representative tree is the cork tree, traditionally used to extract cork.

Very closed to it the Vultures´s gorge, a spectacular canyon formed by the erosive action of river Guadiaro´s waters over the limestones.

El Colmenar fair takes place during the week of July the 25th, honouring St. Santiago Apóstol. In the middle of May, the pilgrimage, in a place called Llano Grande, about 3 kms. from El Colmenar. In August the Cultural Week takes place, dedicated to spread popular customs and traditions.
